Course Overview
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a gold-standard treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and severe anxiety disorders (Hezel & Simpson, 2019). However, when exposure tasks are delivered through a lens of strict protocol rigidity, clinical progress can easily be confused with mere client compliance. When distress is high, unintentional power imbalances can shift the therapeutic alliance from collaborative exposure to fear-based obedience, subtly undermining long-term learning and fear extinction (Buchholz & Abramowitz, 2020; Twohig et al., 2015).
